Here's what BNS has looked for me since I bought it in 2013 (all in US$):
There have been no additions to my holdings during this time period except for reinvested dividends. I bought when the US and Canadian dollars were much closer to par. So between the reinvestments and forex fluctuations, you can see the dividends received (the 'Cost' column) fluctuating. You'll also see I skipped the April 2016 dividend reinvestment; that's during the period I was collecting dividends as cash.
If I were retiring tomorrow and estimating what my income from BNS would be, I'd estimate receiving $40/quarter and ignore the currency fluctuations going forward. Considering the current exchange rate is close to the 30 year average, the amounts received will bounce around the final amount shown.
Hopefully when I get closer that amount will be much higher.
