I read an interesting article the other day that said 
(a) retail stores don't want to admit it, but theft is up because they've reduced staff (theft is especially high with self check-out)
(b) locked items and reduced staff leads to greatly reduced sales, because if a shopper can't find someone quickly enough to unlock the item, they often give up on it
